Brief history of the District

As of today, there is hardly any green forest left on account of massive loggings which has become the bane of the Naga society. The loggers hardly think or realize that a tree being felled could be several hundred years old naturally grown and not planted by human being and that there will be need of trees for the future generations to come. Our Nagas have the unconscious illusion that the earth will be with the present generation. Probably too much of Nostradamus predictions have gone into our heads that the present life is on the verge of being extinguished.

The main crops of the district are Rice, Maize, Beans, Peas, Yam, Brinjal, Chilly, Pumkin, Ginger, Tomato, Bitter-gourd etc. Horticulture products consist of Orange , Banana, Pineapple, Papaya, Mosambique, Guava, Plum , Pear etc. The district supply certain surplus produce from agriculture and horticulture like Beans, Yam, Brinjal, Chilly, Ginger, Tomato, Bitter-gourd etc. and Orange, Pineapple etc. beside varieties of wild vegetables.

The people of the district also practice certain traditional cottage industries mostly during the off season to meet their local requirements, like black smithy, traditional weaving, carpentry and handicraft etc. Minerals like coal and crude-oil are found at Champang area in the lower range. There is a Hydro Electricity station called Doyang Hydro Project, which is located across the Doyang river, having a capacity of 75 MW i.e. 3 x 25 MW.

The staple food diet of the people are rice, bamboo-shoot of various types, fermented or dried fish, yam, vegetables, and meat, which is a delicacy. Food are mostly boiled and species are rarely used. They are very particular both in their food preparations and habit of taste.
